n-Track Recordings

Aria
Traditional Celtic not available
Morning has broken | wma (1.0 MB) | Ye Banks an Braes | wma (n/a)
The songs are traditional Celtic.
The instruments used are Harp and Harpsichord...recorded together on one track with a set of pick up microphones attached to Harp and one to the Harpsichord soundboard..the mics ran through a mixer and then into the LINE IN on the computer....( the four-track tape recorder that came with the mixer was abandoned in favor of n-Track). I don't have a web page as of yet but I should make one...we have other songs recorded with N-Track using recorders (the instruments) and multiple tracks...

I have since sold my Fostex 4 track and use n-Track Studio exclusively.
I have two song excerpts posted on MP3.com
.

My setup is as follows:
Windows 98SE, Intel Celeron 466MHz; 128MB RAM; Western Digital 8.4GB & Maxtor 10GB hard drives; Soundblaster AWE64.
I record directly into the Soundblaster.
Equipment is as follows: n-Track Studio, Sonic Foundry Sound Forge 4.5 (for editing), Digitech RP12 guitar processor which has speaker cabinet emulation for direct recording; Roland GR30 guitar synth mounted on an Ibanez mid-'80s Roadstar guitar; Ibanez S series guitar and an Ibanez RG470 guitar; ZOOM RhythmTrak RT-123 drum machine (with bass patches); Fatar MIDI controller.
I use the GR30 and the RT-123 for bass and the GR30 via MIDI for any synth sounds I might want.
As for the songs, Juror No.11 was composed and recorded entirely in n-Track.
Wrap it up was arranged in Sonic Foundry's ACID with the rhythm and lead guitar parts as well as EQ and effects added in n-Track.

A bit difficult to describe, let's just say eclectic jazz and blues with an occasional Chopin piece or two, and some psuedo Celtic meandering thrown in.

All songs on it were recorded using n-Track along with various DirectX plugins.

These are just suggested tips that we have lived by when recording on N-Track, but obviously you should just go trial and error and try different ways until you find the best combination for you. But for us, these 'tips' usually work:
1) We usually record every single instrument track one at a time. We do what it takes to get the best possible sound and usually we will lay down the guitar tracks one at a time, then any keyboard or percussion if there is any, and then vocals. This allows for the most manipulation of EACH instrument. And of course it's terrible when two people are recording two guitar parts in one shot...if one of you messes up, then both guitar parts are ruined even if the other's part was perfect. Record them seperately and if there is a mistake in one of the tracks, just delete the errored track.
2) Instrument track recording volumes. We tend to find that if you leave the volume up on previous tracks while you are recording a new instrument track, you get a fuller, richer sound. Of course in some songs it sounds best not to do this. But for 85% of our songs we keep the volume up. Obviously you do not want the speaker volume up too loud or the mic will only pick up only the previous tracks coming from your speakers. Keep it low enough so that the new instrument can be heard, but loud enough so that it is also picked up by the mic. This method creates a thicker, richer sound by having previous tracks playing behind the newer tracks.
3) Vocal track recording volume. We almost always record vocal tracks dead last. We unplug the speakers and run a pair of headphones instead. We usually need to hear the music to be sure that we are singing at the correct times, but if you keep the volume up through the speakers, then the sound can drown out vocals. We used to just run it throught the speakers, but eventually our vocals began to get drowned out in the music. After changing our method to the headphones, we get clearer vocal tracks. As I said, this is how we do it and it works for us. It may or may not work for you. Or maybe one of the methods works and the other doesn't. But I wanted to list possiblities so maybe there will be something here you haven't thought of.

My label/studio home page:
http://members.xoom.com/transients
"all the transients" is a label i set up to release my and my friends music as well as live recordings of bands who have played the concert series i promoted for a while, it started as an extension of my recording studio...we deal primarily in music of the avant garde, experimental vein, but enjoy anything out of the ordinary. three of the four artists that make up our primary roster use n-track.

My solo material (under the name model 563)
http://model563.da.ru
I do a broad range of material under this moniker, some of it completely electronic, some acoustic, and some a combination of antique electrical devices, that more than likely werent created for musical use, and acoustic instruments...ive got 2 solo eps coming out, one of string instruments, one of percussion, that will be recorded using n-track along with a variety of mics including an old beyer ribbon mic, and some new octava condensors, typically through my small behringer mixer.

My band burzy ming:
http://burzyming.da.ru
burzy ming is a blend of modern jazz, etherial melancholy pop, and ethnic instrumentation...as a trio, its impossible to play live what we can do in the studio, we use n-track to record all our backing tracks and master them to cd to back us up...our soon to be finished second album was recorded almost entirely, instrument by instrument on n-track.
Thanks for the lovely software, ive used cakewalk, cooledit pro, vegas pro, and though im still a die hard, hardware multi-tracker (i love my adats, and open reels), ive yet to find a better software recorder. with a couple of good mic-pre's plugged into my sound card, this is the best for all my small projects.

The recording was done in one week using 2 Shure SM57s, 2 Shure SM58s, a rented Shure condenser mic, and a rented Behringer 16 Channel mixer.
We used a Roland Bluescube Guitar amp, and didn't finish the bass before we had to bring back the mixer, so the bass was plugged straight into the sound card with an adapter.
At the time I was running a 400 Mhz AMD K6-2 Processor, 128 MB RAM, and had a SB Live. I have a much better setup now, and will have new recordings soon hopefully.

  Little Bit | mp3 (3.0 MB)
The song was recorded by Tim O'Brien using the following hardware:
Mackie 1202VLZ mixer | Alesis Nanocompressor | Shure SM57 and SM58 microphones
P200MMX PC with 64M of RAM, Samsung 3.2G UDMA hdd, SB64, and an Addonics SV550. Software used was n-Track Studio 1.1.3, FAsoft Compressor, and FAsoft parametric.
The drums were mic'd with only 2 mics (one in kick drum, the other overhead), the guitar had one SM57 dangling in front of it from the amp's handle, bass was direct from an Ampeg SVT head, harmonica using an SM58 dangling in front of the player's amplifier. All vocals were done with an SM58.

  Troubles | wma (1.0 MB)
I am a singer and songwriter in Agnes Texas. This is a song I wrote and recorded myself on N-Track...
I did the guitar with a 60 Strat and bass on a customized vintage Kent (precision style) bass... I used pc druns for the basic drum track and embellished it with aYamaha RX7.... I used the n-Track compressor, and the effects already on the app for rev. and flanging.......
I have a slow 75hz cpu w/32 ram I added, and 2gig Hd I added also, and a Soundblaster 64...Which proves you can have fun and results recording on a low budget.

One way | wma (700 KB)
This song began as an instrumental (and still is in this version) that we played at our first decent sized gig along side other local bands in a local Holiday Park's "Fun Day". We live in Christchurch, New Zealand so any gig we get is important. I recorded this song without the rest of the band but later we will re-record it fully when we record our CD!! The drums we're done using "The Drumz Wizard", a shareware drum sequencing program and Yamaha's excellent SoftSynthesizer.
The bass was done using a Roland Intelligent Arranger keyboard (until I can borrow a Bass Guitar).
The guitar was Direct Injected into a Peavey powered mixer and VST effects were added through the VST-DX Wrapper (SpinAudio.com). If you like what you hear check out my
homepage in 2000 to download the songs off our upcoming CD.

Playing wma files

A number of players support the wma standard, among which Winamp v2.5 and later and the the newest Windows Media Player. If an attempt to play a wma file is done with older versions of the Media Player the player will recognize the new file type and will automatically download from the internet the appropriate codec.
