Who: John Tafaro
(MIDI composition, programming, editing & recording)

When: Duran Duran Keyboard Tech inspired me
Mark Tinley to begin my foray into digital music production. I play Keyboard and Noise Guitar, but mostly craft my tunes
Using Band in the Box, Logic Audio and n-Track Studio of course!!

Why:
[..] "
Being an artist literally at heart, I gave Audio production a stab."

What: [..] "I love all music from Bach to Metallica. I have an affinity for new wave
I was always more Duran Duran than Twisted Sister. Jaco Pastorious, John Coltrane, Yanni, Kraftwerk are a few of my favorite bands/musicians."

In Short:

Influences: I would have to say Duran Duran simply because as a Teenager
Seeing The Big Thing tour said that's some serious groove music!!

Gear: Sonic Implants Sounfonts, Sampleheads Will Lee Bass Library

[..] "Being an artist literally at heart, I gave Audio production a stab
When producing a high school band my brother was lead singer in. Being A Duran Duran fan, I corresponded with Mark Tinley back around 1996 (Meddazzaland- era). And Mark was recommending the Turtle Beach Pinnacle Project Studio, and other software gadgets. I got to meet Mark at the Roseland Ballroom.
When Duran Duran played there last. He is a genius when it comes to sequencers and sound design; He designed and programmed the whole Keyboard rig for Nick Rhodes.
Seeing the power and clarity of good samples and software inspired me to create my third Album "Close as a Smile".

ALBUM: "Close as a Smile" to be released March 21, 2002

Tips and Tricks from John Tafaro using n-Track Studio.

[..]
"
My approach to this album as with all my musical endeavors begins very simply with the songs. I use the Roland VSC Sound Canvas with Band in the Box first to get a general idea of what instrument sounds I am looking for. I then generate the music parts or phrases and listen roughly 2 to three times to see if I can feel the song. I edit in BB and will re-generate the melody, swap patches whatever needs to be done to complete the composition in the "feel" I am looking for. I save the song and move on to either NTONYX stylizer or Stylemorpher. Depending again on what "feel" I am searching for. If I play a part or generate a part Stylizer or Morpher can add a little zest or tighten up the composition as I wish. I then use Logic Audio to further edit the MIDI composition. Now it is ready for recording in N-Track Studio. The outputs of my Delta-44 go directly into my Behringer mixer, I use the effect sends and returns which yields a nice crisp sound thanks to the dual 24 bit DSP of the Behringer ULTRADYNE PRO. This unit is a multiband compressor and limiter, noisegate with tube emulation. I import the composition into N-Track and proceed to find the patches I desire for the song. N-Track allows seemless intergration of Cakewalk Dxi synths along with Cubases VSTi instruments. You need no third party "wrapper" programs. N-Track is the best of both worlds. It allows me to run multiple instances of both Dxi and VSTi synth samplers in one session with very little CPU overhead. I assign each part a patch and or synth ( Dxi-VSTi) then EQ and adjust the ULTRADYNE and record. I edit all my tracks using Soundforge 5.0."
