Soundfonts are for MIDI what fonts are for word processors.

Soundfonts are collections of audio samples with keyboard mapping and other parameters, creating virtual instruments from a sample set.

They're based on a public specification (by Creative, the makers of SoundBlaster cards), and is the most popular format for home-brew samples posted on the internet.

Here are cheap and free soundfonts that are recommended by n-Track users:
